TWENTY-SIX

Scott drove the Jeep thirty minutes north to Simón Bolívar Airport in Maiquetía. He pulled through the entrance to the private terminal, then cruised onto the tarmac toward a row of massive hangars. Motoring into one of the hangars, he braked to a stop beside a black-and-white Gulfstream G400 private jet.

Scott cut the lights and engine, and they hopped out. He and Alejandra grabbed their bags, then the three of them advanced toward the jet’s airstairs that dropped down just as they drove up.

A middle-aged pilot greeted Scott as they entered the plane. “Back so soon, sir?” He nodded to both Jason and Alejandra. “We have a destination?”

“Not yet, Captain,” Scott said. “We should by morning. You guys sleep yet?”

“A little,” he replied.

Scott recommended that the crew get some rest, then ushered Jason and Alejandra back toward the cabin. They plopped down into beige leather seats beside each other, while Scott sat across from them.

Alejandra had changed back at the SEBIN headquarters. Instead of her silky pajamas, she wore skintight jeans, black boots, and a black tank top. She’d also tied her hair back and washed off her makeup. Jason couldn’t help stealing a few glances at her. He thought the look suited her—a stronger, more commanding beauty, more Lara Croft than Princess Jasmine.

Since Jason’s clothes were still damp from his dip in the pool, Scott offered some of his extras. Jason changed into cargo shorts and a white T-shirt, keeping the running shoes on from earlier. The clothes were a little small for his frame, but he made do.

“Why do I get the feeling those were the only clothes you own?” Scott jabbed.

Jason laughed. “I travel light. Plus, it wasn’t exactly practical to carry a wardrobe with me while I snuck into Santiago’s marina in scuba gear.”

“You snuck up on somebody in scuba gear? I’m impressed. And surprised that the bubbles didn’t give you away.”

“I’m sure they would’ve. I ditched the gear and free dove the last hundred yards.”

Alejandra looked back and forth between the two of them. “How long have you two been working together?”

“About three hours,” Jason said.

She tilted her head and stared blankly at him. “Three hours?”

Jason told her the story. First, about the tip he’d received regarding the stolen bomb, then searching for the wreck in Los Roques, then tracking the smugglers down to the marina and running into her at Santiago’s nightclub. Then he explained how he’d encountered a little trouble after Hassan decided to blow Santiago to pieces. He told her that the police had picked him up after a fast and the furious car chase, and that Scott had gotten him out.

“I think you would’ve gotten yourself out just fine,” Scott said.

Alejandra went quiet for a moment, as though there was a part of the picture she couldn’t make heads or tails of. “So, Jason, you were here all by yourself? Why?”

He sighed. “Long story. But suffice it to say I’ve got personal reasons for wanting to take down Hassan.”

“We should get some sleep,” Scott said, changing the subject.
